Above is a logo i am creating for a client who is starting up his own web programming business called Breakpoint coding. There are two main inspirations, first is the client request to feature the breakpoint symbol and the assembly of something from nothing. Assembling something from nothing is what has always amazed me about programming. Above is a swatch of a colour that i find strangely alluring, Mountbatten pink or plymouth pink was invented during the second world war by Louis Mountbatten. The colour was designed to camouflage ships and was also adopted by the british SAS during the desert wars with the Germans. The colour despite its appearances is excellent at night because it does not radiate light and allowed especially are desert troops evade the enemy. I just wanted to share this colour with others so please enjoy.

Today at work i bought some apple juice at lunch. The particular brand was Just juice, what caught my attention was the packaging and how it stated the 100% purity of the juice and i instantly found it ironic whilst observing the cluttered in your face appearance of its graphics. I feel that something like the above image would be more in line with the ethos of the brand, a kind of "less is more" vibe. I feel that packaging like the Pepsi Raw bottles are a great example, it emphasizes the raw unrefined nature of the product it carries.

I spotted this poster the other day for the oscar winning film The Social Network which if you havent seen you must. What really caught my attention was this beautiful fot used in the poster, its called Futura and its simplicity is a direct result of the fact that all the glyphs are made up of basic geometries such as triangles, squares and circles. I really like this font especially the precise sharpness of the letter "N" in upper case.

I was sifting through the inter tubes and found an image of the iconic Marlboro red pack. Now im not a smoker i am a designer and it is technically an addiction of some sorts. The reason i have posted this is because i personally think that the Marlboro red packet is a design classic and although i appreciate the importance of the health warnings i do feel they are in some ways a blight on a classic piece of graphic design. In the news of late i heard that the health authorities are thinking of removing all types of graphic from cigarette packaging. There are some designers who have tried to to design new types of packaging design but i think this could be a really interesting brief for designers to undertake.

This is something i have been doing in my spare time at work, its nothing groundbreaking just something i enjoyed doing. These are just Time New Roman letters that have been inverted on themselves and combined with their original. The end result i think is really cool it is something that at first glance resembles what we all know as the original letter but the shapes that are created are eye candy.

The last post I mentioned the abstract appearance of the Office:Mac 2008 icons and it got me thinking about other iconography that is abstract. Right now as I am typing this i do so on my Google chrome browser, the chrome icon is something really strange because it has no connotations of a web browser at all nor does it refer to the Google brand other than the colours that make it up. Yet it is something iconic and is something that you immediately think Google and computer related.

These icons were designed by Landor a firm that specialises in brand identity. What I really love about these icons is the slight abstract appearance they have. They are both pleasing to the eye and at the same time remain informative about the application they represent. Each icon possess a reflective sheen, which if you are a Mac user is very common on apple branding.

Its now 2011 and i have done little in the name of Design since the New Designers show in London (HOT AS HELL!) so to get me back into the swing of things I am starting a new mini project. I am looking at the iconography of Microsoft Office. I know what your thinking...ugh office=essay=boring. But I began to realise that the icons used in Word, Power point and Excel are really important they are almost all universally recognized and in their own right are each individual brands. So I am looking at a redesign of the Office for mac icons for 2012 edition (hypothetical)

I have decide on a method that requires a lot of work. I have decide to manually lathe each pin from aluminium rod. What i found amazing about the lathe was the precision you can achieve. The process is long and each pin took about 45 minutes to make.

J-CAST PINS

After the failed attempt at wax casting the pins i decided to turn to j-cast which is kinda like plastic. I casted the brass master pin in RTV (LATEX) in order to create a mould for the j-cast. The j-cast went ok ish its a good material to work with because you can colour it. The j-cast is quite fragile so i have decided to lathe the pins from aluminium.

I aim to use the brass master pin in the final design however i also want to create aluminium pins too. I use the brass pin to create a rubber mould that would allow me to cast wax multiples for firing in the kiln. The wax is melted out and replaced with molten aluminium. Big problem however the wax models are really fragile and keep breaking.

I need to find a better method.

Above are more images of another combination my modular clothing can make. my favorite aspect about this concept is the ability to disassemble one form and re-assemble another. It is this aspect that i feel will benefit the user to construct basic shelter or create bedding even storage. In this prototype i have created another outfit and a carrier for a baby to sleep in.

Above is an image of the Glue Jeans by the design group DROOG. I posted these images after a conversation with my tutor Geoff about this design. It has really inspired me for my project. The glue jeans are normal jeans that are glued at the seams instead of stitched this makes the user more aware of the function of the object so if the jeans are damaged the user can instinctively glue them back together. I want to create an object thats form is its function and an object that leaves the user to use their imagination when creating solutions.

I am currently reading this book for my research?development part of my project. The book features images of homemade contraptions and tools made during the height of the soviet union. The objects aesthetically are not very pleasing but they are some of the best examples of product design because the creators have identified a need and addressed it with a simple but efficient outcome. What really appeals to me about this book is the conditions that these folk artifacts have been created conditions like poverty lack of resources, conditions that survivors of a disaster might face.

For further research for my project i am looking at varying materials that have suitable properties for my intended out come. Copper is a material that has come to my attention recently whilst watching a documentary about the Dead Sea Scrolls. One part of this ancient hebrew texts found was a scroll of religious text made entirely out of copper. This material is soft enough that any person can simply engrave what they want onto it which is why it caught my attention. Also it protects itself from corrosion much like aluminum and as material cost goes it is not to expensive. I hope to post images of experiments with copper.

Above is a photo of a probe pack to aid the next person in my research videos. The pack contains strictly visual instructions on how to create basic hunting tools based on examples of prison shanks (crafty knives) normally these weapons are used for...well murders but its the actual craftsmanship that appeals to me these weapons are created under limited resources and there need is great. These needs are the same needs that my concept must address. Perhalps these objects could be altered to be used as hunting tools.

This is a corrugated steel fallout shelter from 1962. This shelter can supposedly protect its inhabitants from a nuclear holocaust...hmm these shelters would have come in kits costing $150 in materials. What interests me that by todays standards this all seems OTT (over the top) however in 1962/63 nuclear disaster was not a far fetched possibility. It gives me hope for my potential concept that i am not over reacting to the possibilities of a climate change disaster.
